Jeff's Rainbow

"Mommy! Mommy!" Jeffrey cried,
"Hurry! Hurry! Come outside!"
"It's raining, Jeff!" (He was just four)
"And now you've tracked mud on the floor!"

"Come see!" he said, with sparkling eyes,
"The pretty colors in the sky."
"Oh, that's a rainbow, Jeff," I said,
"I'll come and look," but then instead,

Before I could relax,
I started wiping up his tracks.
They were just little feet, and yet,
He'd left a trail there, soaking wet.

I wiped it up as I could see,
My Jeffrey wait, impatiently.
Just then the phone--it always rings,
When I'm involved in special things.

"My recipe? Sure--just a minute,
Yes, it does have Swiss cheese in it."
How flattering! I hardly knew her--
I had to stop and give it to her.

I hung up the phone, looked around,
And said to Jeff, "What have you found?"
I took his hand--we went outside,
He pointed up, with childish pride.

I saw his disappearing smile,
(I'd only been a little while)
It was right there not long ago,
What happened to my bright rainbow?

I held him close, and as he cried,
I wept myself, deep down inside.
All afternoon I realized
I missed something that Jeff had prized.

And then that night, my little son
Knelt at my feet, when day was done,
And asked the Lord, his heart in tune
"Dear God, please send a rainbow soon,

Because my mommy didn't see
The rainbow that you made for me."
Please send another; make her smile.
Brighten up her sky for just a while.

"I LOVE YOU, LITTLE GIRL"

Once upon a time there was a great man who married
the woman of his dreams. With their love, they created
a little girl. She was a bright and cheerful little girl
and the great man loved her very much.

When she was very little, he would pick her up,
hum a tune and dance around the room,
and he would tell her, "I love you, little girl."

When the little girl was growing up, the great man would
hug her and tell her, "I love you, little girl."
The little girl would pout and say,
"I'm not a little girl anymore."
Then the man would laugh and say,
"But to me, you'll always be my little girl."

The little girl who-was-not-little-anymore left her home
and went into the world. As she learned more about the man.
She was that he truly was great and strong, for now she
recongnized his strengths. One of his strengths was
his ability to express his love to his family.
It didn't matter where she went in the world,
the man would call her and say, "I love you, little girl."

The day came when the little girl who-was-not-little-anymore
recieved a phone call. The great man was damaged.
He had had a stroke. He was aphasic, they explained
to the girl. He couldn't talk anymore and
they weren't sure if he could understand
the words spoken to him.
He could no longer smile, laugh, walk, hug, dance,
or tell the little girl who-was-no-little-anymore
that he loved her.

And so she went to the side of the great man.
When she walked into the room and
saw him, he looked small and not strong at all.
He looked at her and
tried to speak, but he could not.

The little girl did the only thing she could do.
She climbed up on the bed next to the great man.
Tears ran from both their eyes and she drew her arms
around the unless shoulders of her father.

Her head on his chest, she thought of many things.
She remembered the wonderful times together and
how she had always felt protected and
cherished by the great man.
She felt grief for the loss she was to endure,
the words of love that had comforted her.

And then she heard from within the man,
the beat of his heart.
The heart where the music and the words had always lived.
The heart beat on, steadily unconcerned about the damage
to the rest of the body. And while she rested there,
the magic happened. She heard what she needed to hear.

His heart beat out the words his mouth could no longer say....
I love you
I love you
I love you
Little girl
Little girl
Little girl
And she was comforted.

"Special Occasions"

This is more embarrassing for my mother than for me
because I wasn't quite four years old when it happened.
My mother taught me to read when I was 3 years old (her
first mistake). One day I was in the bathroom and noticed
one of the cabinet door was ajar. I read the box in the
cabinet. I then asked my mother why she was keeping
napkins in the bathroom. Didn't they belong in the kitchen?
Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts she told
me that those were for special occasions.

Now fast forward a few months. It's Thanksgiving Day, and
my folks are leaving to pick up the pastor and his wife for
Dinner. Mom had assignments for all of us while they were
gone. Mine was to set the table. You guessed it! When they
returned, the pastor came in first and immediately burst
into laughter. Next came his wife who gasped, then began
giggling. Next came my father, who roared with laughter.
Then came mom, who almost died of embarrassment
when she saw each place setting on the table with a
"special occasion" napkin at each plate, with the fork
carefully arranged on top. I had even tucked the little tails
in so they didn't hang off the edge. My mother asked me
why I used these and, of course, my response sent the
other adults into further fits of laughter.
